what is secure sockets layering (SSL)?
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. In simple terms, it protects your website and your users from fraudulent activity.
There are three main benefits to having an SSL.
- Enables encryption of personal information during online transactions
- Provides unique, authenticated information for certificate owner
- Verifies the certificate owner upon issuance
Having an SSL verifies the existence of your business, ownership of your domain and your authority to hold a certificate. As an SSL holder, you will be held to the highest standards of authentication, which gives your customers all the more reason to trust your business.
Not every site needs an SSL. You should have an SSL for your site if you have:
- An online store or credit card purchase option
- A login or “sign in” to your site
- Sensitive data processing, like social security numbers or driver’s license numbers
- Compliance requirements for security and privacy
- Your customers’ and visitors’ privacy relying on the security of your site
With Internet fraud on the rise, more and more customers are demanding site security. There are several ways for your customers to verify that your site has an SSL.
- When browsing the web, most URLs start with http://. Any time a site is asking for personal information, including passwords, credit card information or more, the domain address should begin with https://. The “S” means the site is secure and all data will be encrypted before it’s sent to the server.
- Look for a “lock” icon in either the lower right or lower left corner of your Internet browser on the page asking for your login or personal information. Double-click it and you will see the details of the site’s security measures.
There are other indicators of a secure site too, like a certified site seal. But don’t get overwhelmed. We can help make sure all your site’s security needs are met.
