Microsoft officially announces "Bing".By .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), May 29th 2009
Microsoft has announced its new entry into the search engine race. Microsoft has been lagging behind with their "Live.com / MSN" search engine and is now hoping that they can narrow the gap with its latest entry, "Bing".
Bing is touted as a "Decision Engine". The goal of the system is to look at the core of the search results and then try to organize them as effectively as possible. Once the results have been organized, present this in the most meaningful manner to the user.
"The way the world searches is changing. You want more than just information. You want knowledge that leads to action.
The truth is you've evolved. It's time search caught up.
So we had an idea. Start over. And we did."
I am personally a big fan of this type of approach. Back in the days of the .com, I spent quite a bit of time building a search engine for the e-learning market. In our situation, we understood the content that was being searched and could easily build relationships between different types of content. Once we organized our results we could display this information back to the user in a way to help them find their answer quicker and get back to their task at hand.
It will be very interesting to see how this is accomplished on the Internet as a whole. If they are able to pull it off it has the potential to be a great experience for users.
Several other existing services from Microsoft will be rebranded with the "Bing" brand.
- Bing Travel - Formerly "Farecast" travel search.
- Bing Maps - Formerly Microsoft's Virtual Earth service.
- Bing Cashback - Formerly Live.com's product search.
You can find out more about Bing here and here. There is also a YouTube channel which can be found here.
Over the coming weeks I am sure you will start to hear more and more about Bing. They are backing up their new baby with an $80 million dollar advertising campaign.
The public release is set for June 3rd. I will be watching this one very closely and I will report back with some of my findings once I have had the chance to nose around a bit.

Our new site for web design and online marketing services is now ready to go. We spent the last few months really trying to develop the right solutions that will allow us to help our customers focus on their online efforts.
We looked around and saw that there are a lot of companies out there focusing on building new websites and not really paying attention to the sites that are already out there. There are a lot of companies out there that created a website several years ago and really have not touched it since. This is where we can help...
At J. Fitzgerald Group we thrive on helping our customers be as successful as they can be. From traditional advertising, online, or a mixture of it all, we can help. We are a full service agency that has the know how and experience to make your marketing efforts successful.
For the launch of our new site, we created several new postcards that we will be sending out. I wanted to show off a preview of these postcards on our site. They really came out great and I think the message hits perfectly... take a look!
